What is pH Balance Anyway?
Before I started this business I had no idea what pH meant, I mean I’ve heard of it, but didn’t know why it was a thing. Turns out keeping a healthy pH balance on your scalp is how you prevent hair loss, dandruff, bacteria & fungus!
pH stands for “potential of hydrogen” or “power of hydrogen - it is a scale that is used to specify the acidity or basicity of an aqueous solution( a solution in which the solvent is water).
A healthy pH range is from 4 to 6.0, 5.5 being prime. It is important to use shampoos with a balance pH level to keep the cuticle layer of your hair flat and closed (helps keep your hair moisturized) which results in less hair loss, shiny, smooth, soft hair, and less frizz. A good shampoo will be balanced between 5 to 5.8.
Shampoos ellxi uses is Davines ( pH balance of 5 to 5.8) and Nekko which has a higher pH (6 to 7) since it is used for dandruff treatment.
Now companies are not required to disclose pH levels on shampoo bottles but a quick Google search will help you find it.
Usually, people think that a dry scalp is the cause of dandruff or itching but in reality it is often seen in people with oily scalp and skin. Oily scalp, hair products, dead skin cells and dirt build up and ends up clogging hair follicles which can prevent hair growth and irritate the scalp.
To sum it up, use shampoos that have balanced pH level, no sulfates, no parabens or alcohols and be sure to wash your hair every other day or at least every 2 days. I know that sounds impossible but TRUST me it will make a difference! And hey if you don’t want to wash your own hair you got me to do it for you - Book Hair Wash ;) Our hair and scalp spa will make everything better!
