Why Does Dandruff Happen?

Women suffering from dandruff

There are many reasons why dandruff happens; weather, stress, the type of products you use and on and on I can go. Although dandruff isn’t fully curable there are many ways to control it.

First, let’s take a look at the root of dandruff. Dandruff isn’t about your hair but about the skin on your scalp.

Skin cells continuously form on the scalp, so shedding of dead skin cells is normal but sometimes with dandruff, skin cells shed faster than normal. Because the shedding process is faster, the oil from the scalp causes the skin cells to clump together which appears as white flakes.

Another factor can be the overgrowth of yeast-like fungus which can cause dandruff. This can be caused by stress, hormones, too much oil on the scalp or immune system problems.

In order for dandruff to be maintained, old routines need to be changed. Here are some new things you can implement:

  • Change your shampoo- sometimes a change is a good thing just like in life! So try out a shampoo that is specific to dandruff and it may surprise you!

  • Eat your protein! You can read more about this in the other blog post Solutions to a Healthy Scalp

  • Lather some almond oil, aloe or lemongrass a couple of hours before you wash your hair

  • Give your hair a rest from dying or using extensions

  • vitamin D - whether it be the natural sun or supplements, this helps prevent the fungus that causes dandruff! Just be sure to wear some sunscreen!

  • Take some supplements; Omega 3, Vitamin C and Vitamin D

  • Get blood circulation on your scalp by giving yourself a head massage or just come to me ;)

  • And lastly drink Collagen, read my blog post What’s the Big Deal with Collagen Anyway to learn more about the importance of collagen!

Eventually consistency will help with controlling your dandruff - if you have any questions reach out and I am happy to chat. Our hair and scalp spa will help you navigate through the process of healthy hair with steps on what to do next for beautiful healthy hair!
